  2. As you probably know, if you move a
  3. magnet past a wire an electric
  4. current is generated.  This is how
  5. atomic generating stations work. 
  6. An atomic pile turns water into
  7. steam, the steam flows past fans,
  8. making them turn.  The fans are
  9. connected to magnets and the
  10. magnets spin within coils of wire,
  11. creating lots of electricity. This
  12. is also how disks work.  Spots on
  13. the disk are magnetized,
  14. representing bits of bytes. As the
  15. disk spins by a small coil in the
  16. head, as the spots pass, spikes of
  17. electricity are produced.  These
  18. spikes are translated into bytes
  19. and passed to the CPU and the RAM.

  24.     If you run a current through
  25. a wire near a magnetizable
  26. metal, the metal will become
  27. magnetized. This is how writing
  28. to a disk is done.  As the disk
  29. turns past the coil in the head,
  30. the coil is energized every time
  31. an "on" bit is to be written to
  32. the disk, resulting in a
  33. magnetized spot. The switching on
  34. and off of the electricity
  35. flowing through the head is very
  36. fast.
